Many people drink coffee each morning and most feel it helps them 'wake up' and get energized for the day. There are even quasi serious jokes not to bother them until they have had a least 1 cup. Is this a good habit to get into or is coffee harmful? There have been many conflicting reports over the years but what do the medical experts say now?

The consensus says that there are cons to routine coffee drinking but for the most part the good does outweigh the bad. They have found that there is no connection between coffee and increased risk for cancer or heart disease. Instead, the known risk factors for these conditions tend to already be higher in those who consume a lot of the beverage. A genetic predisposition to slower than normal metabolism of caffeine may also play a role.

Coffee is high in antioxidants; chemicals which fight free radicals (cell changing, disease causing agents). The newest research shows the pros of java drinking are protection from Parkinson's Disease, Type 2 Diabetes and Liver Cancer.

Obviously, if you are one of those who drink nothing but coffee all day, you bump yourself over to the 'not so beneficial' category. Caffeine in coffee acts as a diuretic, dehydrating the body if not rehydrated with other fluids. Also, nutrients available in other drinks such as juices, milk etc. may be missed. As with everything the key to getting the most benefit while reducing risk-MODERATION. Too much caffeine can also cause sleeplessness, anxiety, jittery feelings and irritability. If you notice any of these symptoms, just reach for the water instead of going for your 3rd, 4th or even 5th cup of joe.
